Massafra

Massafra is the largest center on the western side of the province of Taranto and rises along the grandiose and suggestive San Marco ravine. The uniqueness of Massafra is that, unlike other places in which the rock culture is outside the more recent town, in it the various living passages can be appreciated simultaneously from the top of the three bridges that connect the two parts of the city . Massafra is the city that preserves the largest number of churches and rock crypts from the Basilian era in the whole of Puglia, among which we limit ourselves to mentioning the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala, at the bottom of the homonymous ravine (which is accessed via a 125 steps), S. Antonio Abate, San Marco, the Madonna della Candelora etc. Not far from the Sanctuary, continuing along a path inside the ravine, we find a series of intercommunicating caves, where the monks used to store medicinal herbs (hence the name of Farmacia del Mago Greguro). Of considerable historical interest is the varied assortment of churches in Massafra, from the Byzantine ones to the recent constructions of the 70s and 80s; of particular interest are the aforementioned Sanctuary of the Madonna, the baroque church of San Benedetto and the cathedral of San Lorenzo, the cathedral of Massafra which, together with the ravines and the castle, represent one of the symbols of the city due to the dome that overlooks the whole city centre. Last but not least place to visit is the castle, perched on the top of the San Marco ravine which was built in the 14th century on the foundations of a previous construction, perhaps Norman.
Among the most important events to remember there is certainly the Massafrese Carnival, which is among the most popular in the Puglia Region.
