Historical Notes on the Massafra Carnival

The origins of the Massafra Carnival date back to 1951, when a group of actors from the local drama club organized a prank, announcing a fake bullfight on the last Sunday of Carnival. This event aroused great enthusiasm among the citizens and gave rise to the Massafra carnival tradition. In the past, the celebrations began on January 17, the day of Sant’Antonio Abate, with a series of “festini” that took place mainly on Sundays and Thursdays. The latter were particularly significant and had specific names, such as “Monks’ Thursday”, “Priests’ Thursday”, “Cuckolds’ Thursday” and, finally, “Madmen’s Thursday”, the day on which the celebration reached its peak.

Massafra Carnival 2025 Program

The 72nd edition of the Massafra Carnival will take place from February 27th to March 4th 2025, with a calendar full of events for all ages. Here are the main events:

• February 27: “Thursday of the Madmen” Grand Ball. The inaugural event will be held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele starting at 8:00 pm. The evening will be animated by nationally renowned artists, including the DJs of the Praja Tour, DJ Scavo and the violinist Mark Lanzetta, offering music and entertainment for everyone. • March 2: First Parade of the Masked Courses. The parade will begin at 5:30 pm starting from the Stadio Italia. 15 masked groups and 4 character masks will participate, ready to color the streets of the city with spectacular costumes and choreography. (Source iltaccodibacco.it)
